Ascend Learning: Learning Management Projects for ATI, CDX and ExamFX
WORK COMPLETED IN 2014 - 2019
Ascend Learning typically uses Moodle for a learning management system. However some business units have created their own LMS. Assessment Technologies Institute, (ATI) a business unit owned by Ascend wanted to create their own LMS. This would allow them greater control over content, design, and functionality for their users.
The LMS product that my team lead the design for is called Virtual ATI or "VATI." VATI, is for students close to graduating or who have graduated Nursing School looking to prepare for their NCLEX exam.
This process involved creating mockups in low fidelity using Balsamiq. We then tested using InVision's prototyping tool. After looking at the qualitative and quantitative results, we revised the wires began mocking them up in higher fidelity design using Sketch and the Material Design Component Library. A visual language and theme was created for the business unit, so components would reflect the ATI brand.
Finally, pixel perfect mockups were passed along to development, where they could use InVision Inspect or Zeplin to create the UI used in final production.

Usability Test Findings
CDX is and Ascend business Unit that uses an LMS. This project was a simple heuristic evaluation for a few screens in their existing system.
Their current LMS does not integrate well with the ancillary assets produced by 3rd parties. The workflow should be optimized to provide the right information at the right time for CDX students in a way that is seamless, avoiding multiple clicks and navigation points to get this information.
ExamFX LMS Mobile Redesign project. ExamFX helps learners become certified in selling securities or insurance. This project was a redesign to accommodate mobile viewports, but also to improve the overall workflow.
Initial workflow for configuring a "Virtual Calendar" below:
Virtual Calendar Old Workflow:
-
First users select a day (in the calendar to the left) they want to start studying on.
-
Users select their schedule, by checking and unchecking options, or exclude days
-
Configuring notifications is important in order to receive reminders of when to study
-
There's an option to export calendar.
-
In this example, a scenario shows that a specific day assigned to complete tasks. On the right is a list of chapters you have yet to study.
Virtual Calendar New Workflow:
Low Fidelity wireframes for the improved flow, which reduced the number of screens the user had to configure, and made the path to completion clear.
-
The workflow is separated into steps to reduce cognitive load. Users will understand the order of setting up a Virtual Study Calendar.
-
Once configured students can clearly see what they need to work on for the scheduled day.
-
The last two screens show how the components come together after the configuration.
